A large part of this is since I graduated from the Bachelor of Music Program at Boston University in 1963, and also because I am an educator (Brown University from 1970 to 1975), and have observed the liberal arts education from a first-hand perspective (Brown University) It is my belief that educational programs should incorporate studies in art along with different subjects. This shouldn't come as a surprise from an ethnomusicologist who has obtained an MA in 1967 as well as a Ph.D. in the field of ethnomusicology from UCLA. It is not surprising that the department for ethnomusicology located at UC Berkeley, where I taught from 1975 until 1976 is housed in the college of letters and Sciences' Department of Music. It is fun to have multiple passions. It is also fun to see the larger perspective. Undergraduates as well as graduate students (for which I've written three textbooks: Music in India, The Classical Traditions of India, Thinking Musically: Music in Japan - Experiencing Music - Expressing Cultural Expression) I enjoy teaching. My teaching schedule will then alternate between periods of primarily academic pursuits and administrative duties (I was Chair of Department of Music from 1983 to 1988, Dean of Undergraduate Advising from 1992 to 1998 and the Chair of the College of Letters and Science Deans 1994-98; Chair of Group of Asian Studies since 1999 and am now back as Chair of Department of Music).
